FURNITURE
Most of the furniture we keep dates from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and often has a relatively massive structure. Certain types of furniture dominate this category, such as sheathed clocks and storage units like sideboards, wardrobes and chests of drawers. Often made from solid oak, there are also a few small pieces of furniture veneered and inlaid with precious woods.
There are far fewer chairs than storage units, but they are also part of our furniture collection, such as a lounge suite comprising a bench and six chairs in inlaid mahogany, two of which are stamped by the Brussels cabinetmaker Jean-Joseph Chapuis.
One of the most remarkable pieces on display in the museum is a cabinet in ebony and tortoise shell with ivory and brass inlays. We also have a seventeenth-century carved oak sideboard, which, unusually for furniture, bears its date of completion on the front!
